OSCARS 100 - ALTERNATIVE COURSE BRIEFING
It’s on! It's different, but it's on…
We have made the tough call not to use the original 100km this weekend. We know some of you will be disappointed, and we feel you, but the safety of competitors, volunteers, and staff comes first.
The predicted weather makes the remote areas of the course dangerous. Any injury to a competitor out there would pull resources from all around the course, leaving us unable to provide safety and medical. The result would be shutting down the event and all competitors DNFing. The safest solution is to run an alternative course for the 100km event, so that’s what we are doing.
The good news is that we are opening a brand-new 50km course. You can find details of this route here https://www.terrainium.com.au/blog/hut-2-hut-2025/ – navigate using the dropdown tool on the map to “Hut to Hut ALT loop course”. (only use the links for H2H Alt Loop)
The new course takes in the summits of Buller and Stirling, gives you a look at the huts at Howqua Gap and Craigs, offers a long ye-hah downhill bomb to Mirimbah, and a climb back up to the Buller summit via Klingsporn and the north face.
Single Day & Miler competitors
You have a choice.
Remain as a one-day 100km runner – you’ll do two laps of the new 50km course on Friday. Start time is 500am, cut-off for first loop 1230pm. (7.5 hours.) Second loop cut off 9pm (total 16 hours). More on cut-offs to come. We know it’s fast, but it is significantly more runable than the big loop.
Switch to a two-day runner, doing one lap of the new course on Friday. Start time 5am. Sleep on the mountain. And one lap of the Archie on Saturday. Start time 500am.
There is an update to your mandatory gear – you must carry a warm non-cotton mid-layer/fleece. You do not need to carry course notes.
Two Day Solo and Two Day Teams
You will be doing the new course on Friday, start time 500am. Finish cut off 9pm. Sleep on the mountain. And doing the Archie on Saturday start time 500am. Finish cut-off 930pm.
There are changes to your mandatory Gear: You do not need to carry your sleeping bag and mat. You must carry a warm non-cotton mid-layer/fleece. Team runner do not need to carry their sleeping bags and mats. You do not need to carry course notes.
Three Day Teams
Unfortunately, there is no way to run a three-day event. You will become a two-day competitor. You will be doing the new course on Friday, Friday, start time 500am.
You do not need to carry course notes.
If you are a single-day or a multi-day competitor and you miss cut off or DNF on Friday (any runner who DNFs for medical reasons on the Friday may NOT run again on the Saturday.) You can still do the Archie on Saturday and finish the event.
Drop bags only at the Start/Finish line. We strongly encourage you to have a warm change of clothes at the finish line.
If you’d prefer you can downgrade from the 100km to either of the 50km events on Friday or Saturday.
Make sure you still have all the required mandatory gear including the compulsory mid-layer fleece, or similar. (No hoodies or cotton jumpers) You will not be able to participate without all you required gear (sleeping bags and mats are no longer mandatory for any competitors. It will be cold so if you can carry please consider taking your sleeping bag with you).
We understand that some may be disappointed in not being able to experience the full Hut 2 Hut course, up high on the ridge lines - however we put participant safety at the centre of all decision making, and have done our utmost to provide an alternative experience *that will still challenge you*, in place of not being able to use the original course. We thank you in advance for your patience and understanding. And of course, there's always next year... come back and get your alpine high then.
